herding cats or building commmunity?

Happy hump day (Wednesday)!

Well, in the midst of a crazy chaotic world it’s good to find some sanity along the way.

A lot of people blame Covid for all the isolation in America, but people were pretty isolated before that.

It just made it worse. The good news is, we don’t have to be isolated unless we choose to be.

Don’t get me wrong, some time alone is good for the soul; but staying isolated for months on end is a very unhealthy thing to do.

So in the spirit of getting our of this mess, let’s look at this a little closer.

I saw a quote attributed to Steve Jobs a while ago (which I guess was really an old African proverb) that made a lot of sense.

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Trying to bring people together sometimes is like trying to herd cats.

Everyone is off on their own tangent or being hermits and whining about their own problems (which they think no one else has).

I guess I got spoiled by the incredibly strong bond formed in the military.

You always had each other’s backs, all the time.

That was and is more important than any advanced weapon system ever developed.

I am still in contact with my old Paratrooper buddies from decades ago.

So what’s the secret?

Here’s a few things to think about:

We had a common enemy

We always worked as a unit

We knew we could trust the guys beside us

Is the civilian world like that?

No way!

It seems like everyone who doesn’t have the same worldview as you is your enemy.

You see it in politics every day.

You see it lifestyle choices.

You see it in the fitness world.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Find a few like-minded people and stick with them.

Have a common goal.

Work hard together.

Respect each other’s skills and abilities.

Have a good sense of humor and don’t be easily offended.

Just a few thoughts for ya,
